This walk will cover Haussmann’s works and urban planning in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. The tour expands from the Palais Royal to the Opera via the “Grands Boulevards”, with Haussmannian avenues and major buildings to witness the amazing changes that occured in the city in the 19th century.
We’ll learn about architectural changes and typical features put together to create the Paris as we see it today, as well as the economic, social and military meanings behind all the massive works.
The second Empire, spreading feom 1852 to 1870 indeed meant innovation and progress for the city and the country. Even though most of the changes happened during that period, the works all around Paris went on well after, up to the 1920’s.
The walk also includes a wonderful panorama from a department store, a recently renovated superb and vast library lecture room but also the vaults and central counter of a nineteenth century bank!
Walk in English organized for expats in Paris.
