Welcome to Argenteuil!
Although located just 15 minutes away from Paris with a local train, the discreet “Sous Préfecture” is not on top of the tourist’s list.
We will try and change that!
First with a trip to Saint Deny’s Basilica. Even if the church is fairly new, from the 19th century, it replaces various older buildings. In 800 AD, The Tunic Jesus wore during his crucifixion was part of a deal for the alliance between the Byzantine Empire and Charlemagne.
He gave it to his daughter, a nun in Argenteuil. Despite many historical upheavals, the Holy Tunic is still in the city today to be admired at special times only.
On the way from the station to the church, we’ll have a look at different sites of interest such as the conservatory and ruins of a former famous abbey.
Lunch, of course the most important aspect of the tour, will take place in a local and quite affordable brasserie of the city center. Afterwards, the tour will show other interesting highlights, such as an ancient watch tower or a Protestant Temple built with neogothic architecture.
We’ll the go to the museum of impressionism, a former home of Claude Monet. The great painter lived 8 years in Argenteuil with his family in the 1870’s.
In a comfortable mansion, the visitor is able to feel the painter’s intimacy with period furniture and objects. But also to understand Monet’s connections to colors and modernity.
Argenteuil train station is just a few minutes away. We’ll take the first train going back to Paris.
The 6 hours trip to Argenteuil includes all entrance tickets.
A valid transportation Navigo card is required.
