The Latin Quarter is one of the most ancient areas of Paris. With Roman remains, it also houses old churches, charming streets and prestigious monuments.
The Latin Quarter has long been associated to the Sorbonne University, one of the oldest in the world. This is where students and teachers from all over Europe met, speaking Latin, the international language. Hence the name of the neighborhood today.
Our tour will start with Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sainte Chapelle, two world-famous monuments. Both symbols of Gothic architecture they are established on the island, where the Gallic city of Lutetia was probably born.
Going left bank the itinerary will pass by Paris’s oldest tree, two old and unusual churches. But also, Medieval narrow winding streets full of lively restaurants, varied boutiques and countless bookstores.
The Latin Quarter spreads over a hill lined with blocks from Sorbonne University and other schools. It is topped by a superb 17th century chapel. It is also where the splendid Middle Ages art museum can be found. The Medieval mansion was built over huge Roman baths from the first century AD, still visible today.
On top of the hill, the massive Pantheon building proudly stands. Built as a church, it was quickly changed to welcome the great people worthy of France.
A beautiful church located behind is a real hidden gem, housing the Antic tomb of the Saint Patroness of Paris.
The tour will end not far behind, in a long street famous for the lively cafés and restaurants, central to Parisian life and symbol of the Latin Quarter for over a thousand years.
