Explore Belleville, one of Paris’s most secret neighborhoods.
The tour begins in the Belleville heights. In this working-class neighborhood, we’ll see the house where Edith Piaf was born in poverty. The often derelict workers’ housing was largely replaced in the 1960s. A large park now sits at its center, offering one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Paris.
Some small passageways remain, lined with charming 19th-century houses and a few private lanes.
The streets of Belleville reveal the true Paris, with its mix of social housing, neighborhood restaurants, and small shops.
Another charming alley leads to an old villa, dating from before the Revolution. It now houses a contemporary art center.
After this visit, the tour takes us to a street with unique venues: cafes, restaurants, concert halls, and nightlife spots. Their history has left its mark on the neighborhood.
The descent leads to a former railway line, now transformed into a promenade and community gardens. After passing the neighborhood church, the tour will head towards other side streets and then the main boulevards.
It’s a true crossroads for Jewish and Muslim communities originating from Tunisia, as well as for the Chinese community. It boasts the oldest Jewish butcher shop in Paris, along with numerous bars, restaurants, and cabarets. Belleville is indeed a very lively neighborhood, popular with young people in the evenings.
Walk in English organized for expats in Paris.
